Third egg yesterday. Aren't chickens brilliant?
There's a weirdness to all of this. Even us townies know where eggs come from. We probably eat an egg in one form or another every day, yet there's a fundamental thing about being involved in part of that process in no matter how small a way.
The look on Ruby's (aged 5) face said it all. When we opened the nest box and discovered the first egg and she ran off through the house shouting to mum at the top of her voice THEY'VE LAID AN EGG!!
There's something deep.
I remember feeling similar things when we had a modest vegetable garden in Stockton. Being involved in the process of bringing these things to the table is something we've pretty much lost. To grow something, or tend to it, and then see it producing that which nourishes us - it calls to deep. It's more than saving a few pennies, or a trip to the shop... Precious lessons for Ruby.
ReplyDeleteThere's one thing we take issue with though - stop FRYING those beautiful eggs!! What a waste.
That was the first one at Ruby's request. She wanted a 'flat egg' as she calls it. We've boiled 'em all since is that ok?
ReplyDeleteYou enjoy them just how you like them my friend. It s all part of the call to deep.
